As a business leader of the City of Maribyrnong, the Save Footscray Pool Group is seeking your support to retain the Footscray Swim Centre.
As you would be aware, Maribyrnong City Council is seeking to build a regional aquatic facility at Highpoint shopping center. To raise money for this project, Maribyrnong Council wants to close down our much-loved Footscray Swim Centre and sell off the land. The Save Footscray Pool Group believes Footscray Swim Centre adds to the viability of the Footscray business district as it attracts customers to shop in the areas adjoining the pool. As such the community will not only lose the major recreational facility in the southern suburbs of Maribyrnong, but an already economically depressed business centre will suffer further.
We have no objection to a new pool being built to service the needs of the residents of the northern suburbs of Maribyrnong City. It is a worthy vision. However, it is hardly reasonable that the residents of Footscray, Seddon, Yarraville, West Footscray and Kingsville should be disadvantaged by not having an accessible pool. Footscray Swim Centre is an important, well-patronized, multicultural community facility. Whilst Maribyrnong City Council has allowed it to run down and it is in need of upgrade, there are no major problems and there is no good reason to close the Centre.
We are therefore writing to you to ask you to pledge your support. At this time, we are not seeking funding, just your support and permission to include your companies name on our Footscray Pool Supporters List. We will be using this list to demonstrate to Maribyrnong City Council that the business community within Maribyrnong values and does not want to lose the Footscray Swim Centre.
